We’re all impostors.

At least that’s what I’ve often felt, particularly in the early stages of my career. A creeping dread and sense that I’m out of my depth.

It still happens. It’s like someone taps me on the shoulder and whispers in my ear, “You shouldn’t be here”. A mixture of a ninja and the Tango Man.

Like drinking from the milk carton, it’s more common than we think and no-one admits it. Here’s some thoughts on what’s really going on, I’d love to hear yours:

👻 It’s all about fear. Fear that you’re not good enough to be here and you’ll get found out. Like most fears, it’s irrational — the worst thing that can happen isn’t bad at all. You can change your personal narrative to tackle this.

🦸🏽 Your role in this moment might be different. I was trained in a profession where, at first, I thought I was supposed to know all of the answers, all of the time. That’s not true. Sometimes your contribution is to listen or direct the conversation.

🔎 You can reframe what’s going on. If you feel out of your depth, then that means you’re surrounded by people who have more knowledge than you. That’s an opportunity to learn. Be curious and ask lots of questions.

⚖️ There’s strength in truth. Sometimes, most times, it’s ok to say “This isn’t an area I’m that familiar with, but I’d like to understand more”. And just like that, you’re released from your prison.

🧗‍♀️ You’ve chosen to push yourself. Bradley Wiggins once said that anyone pushing their bike up a hill had chosen a challenge beyond their capability, and they should be applauded for that. Same applies here.
